Object Reference Error

Hi,
Vault 3 has been running happily for a while. But now I am unable to login to Vault. I get the error 'Object reference is not set to an instance of an object' (see attached). All other clients are running and I'm able to login on another machine.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I've seen this error message before. I believe it's related to a .NET
problem.

Suggestion:
Uninstall .NET framework 1.1 SP1 or other hotfixes
Uninstall .NET Framework 1.1
Install .NET Framework 1.1 and then SP1
Change/repair Vault 3 server (add/remove components, change/repair instead
of uninstall/reinstall).

I think that should resolve your problem.

Thanks,

Thanks a lot Bob. I will try. Do you mean repair Vault 3 Server or Client? The server is communicating fine with the other clients.

Good point, sorry I don't know how I overlooked that detail. If the other
clients are successfully connecting you may just try to change/repair the
Vault client and see if that does the trick. I think I saw that error
message and ran with it, bad assumption on my part, because I've seen it a
handful of times. Usually, that is a reference to something not being right
with .NET framework. If the change/repair on the client doesn't do the
trick, you might take a look at your vlog files (which are located in yourn
default filestore folder on the Vault server - even if the file store has
been moved elsewhere). The vlog files and maybe the VaultManager logs in the
same location can yield clues about where the problem lies.

Let me know how it goes..

Hello Bob,

Unfortunately no luck. Same error. I'm trying again this time completely uninstalling .net and Vault client and then reinstall. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks, Karl

I got the same problem. Tried your ideas and they did not work. Any other ideas?

You might want to try removing this folder (or renaming it) to see if
you can log in.

C:\Documents and Settings\<>\Application
Data\Autodesk\VaultExplorer

you will loose some customization like saved search and short cuts,
however this might fix your issue.

There is a folder called something... I just don't remember what it is
(I have Productstream installed and that folder is a bit different.)

in this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\<>\Application
Data\Autodesk\

There are a series of folders - here are ones you should see:

"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\VaultCommon"
"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\VaultManager"
"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\VaultExplorer"
"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\InventorVault"
"%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Autodesk\ProductStream"

(You can copy and paste these paths right into your windows explorer
address bar - the Windows environment variable %USERPROFILE% will take
you to the proper folder where your user data is stored.).

there might be others as well if you use the ACAD integration. I would
look for the Vault Explorer folder again and try to remove that. if you
have ever successfully logged into the Vault, this folder will be there.

Could this folder be just called vault and in my documents?

Karl,

In Vault 3 it was registry based.. in PS2/Vault 3.5 and PS4/Vault 4 it's the
folders Brian is talking about.. I don't have Vault 3 on my systems any
longer but I believe it was under something like this:

HKCU\Software\Autodesk\PLM\V3.0\Preferences.... I don't think that's the
exact folder, but it's pretty close.. under PLM there

Unfortunately still no go. There were two folders, preference and preferences. Both were removed, but the 'object' error persists....

Guys,
It turned out to be a simple connectivity issue. That strange error threw me. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

I found a page for troubleshooting connection errors. Go to http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?id=4791211&linkID=4517338&siteID=123112 Mine was related to the time on the server and client being out of sync.
I hope this helps.

I had this error on my computer as well.
I had changed a setting on the short-cut icon to "maximise window". Change this to "Normal window" (default) and see if the problem still persists.

I saw the same error message with Vault 4 SP2 client on XP Pro SP2. Changed
my shortcut Run: setting from Maximized to Normal Window and the error
message went away. Thanks for the tip. -Paul
