can not make holes adaptive

Hi all,

I have an assembly that I have brought into my model. I exploded the piece
and then promoted it. I have another piece that is going to mate to the
first piece. I constrain it like I want it, start a sketch and project the
diameter that I want to be adaptive, and I get pink projections. To my
understanding, these will not be adaptive. What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be a big help.

Thank You.

First of all, what do you mean by "exploded"?
Second, edges referenced by another part in an assembly will be adaptive if the
part and feature are checked as adaptive. But I'm not sure of your workflow. You
say "I have another piece that is going to mate to the first piece." Does this
mean it is already created and you are adding it to the assembly? Are you adding
features to an existing part? Are you sketching in PART mode and not ASSEMBLY
mode?

Sorry Dave, I slipped into Autocad mode for a second..... I'll be ok.

Yes, the piece is already created. It has a pilot diameter on it which I
want to pilot into the base. The base is the assembly that I brought into
my model and promoted. The spindle is going to mount on the base but I
don't know where exactly yet. I want to make the mating holes in the base
adaptive to the location of the pilot diameter. I edit the base in the
assembly, start a sketch and project the pilot diameter onto the base. The
projected geometry comes in pink (non-adaptive).

Should I put the holes in the assembly and not while I am editing the
part????

Thanks for your help.

Under Tools-->Application Options-->Assembly, make sure the "Cross Part Geometry
Projection" is checked on.

Dave,

Thank you. That was the problem.

It was suggested to turn that off by default to cut down on the "cross part
modeling......" errors.

see my post "Need help on Cross Part Modeling Failure" dated 4-19-03.

Thanks again

You can keep this option "off" and just
hold down the control key while clicking
the edge you want to project adaptive.
