Do I have to create a single part assembly?

OK we've been playing with IV for a year or so but now want to produce some production drawings.

We like the automated partslist for the drawing bill of materials for assemblies but there's a problem when it comes to part drawings.

When you are machining a part the BOM should call up our standard raw material part number, and weight etc, not the part properties ie partno etc. It's like a circular reference, makes no sense.

Do people make separate idw templates for parts and assemblies so that a bom for a part pulls custome material properties and boms for assemblies work as normaal?

This is our situation:

 

We have one mainassembly with all our products in
it. Each product is a sub-assembly. Each sub-assembly has been given a certain
name that will show up in the partlist of our Process General
Arrangement.

 

Each sub-assembly is also built-up of
sub-assemblies. Also each single part has been put into a assembly. Why? Simple,
because in an assembly, a part would be named "Top Closing Plate" and in the idw
of that "Top Closing Plate" the name would simply be "Plate".

So our Arrangement drawings show the names of the
sub-assemblies.

 

Also, if for-any-reason something should be welded
onto a single part, you just open the sub-assembly and add that other part. If
you would have placed a part in you assembly, all your constrains would be lost
when turning that part into an assembly.

 

Last but not least: the production drawings show
the names of the individual parts.

Hi Ron!

In our company we really do use two kinds of teplates. The other is for
assemblies and the other is for parts. In bom there are differencies as you
assumed.

Actualy, we also use 2 different templates
also!

 

In the Arrangement template the mass is show of the
assemblies/parts, in the Drawing template the material/dimensions are shown
(mass has been left out).

templates.
