Converting an autocad drawing

I have a drawing from a customer I need to edit.  It was sent to me in autocad2004 format.  Can I convert this to an .ipt drawing so I can edit and add or delete things?  I have Inventor 2012.  If so, what do I do to accomplish this?  Thanks for your help.

Is it a 2d drawing or a 3d part?

It would be easier to create the IPT by using the 2D DWG as a reference.

As in, re-draw it?  It would be easier if it could be converted to a way I could edit it, as there is a lot of detail.

There is no 'easy' button to do this.  The best way is to create the 3D IPT by using the 2D DWG as a reference.

IF you want a 3d model, you'll have to create it.

If you want to edit the 2d drawing, just open it in Acad (it's included with Inventor).

Do you have Inventor Suite? If so, why not just use AutoCad?

Inventor Fusion to edit a 2D AutoCAD drawing?  Thats a bit overkill, don't ya think?

I assumed if the OP was posting in Inventor forum their intention was to take the 2D and use it to create 3D model.

Perhaps my assumption was incorrect.

Kevin shows how to use AutoCAD 2D in Fusion to create 3D in the links I posted earlier.

At one time there was an add-in on http://labs.autodesk.com to facilitate bringing in AutoCAD 2D into Inventor (that is regular Inventor - not Inventor Fusion).  You might check and see if it is still there.

If you are familiar with Inventor (doesn't sound like you are) I would do the job in Inventor.

If you are not familiar with Inventor, AutoCAD or Fusion might be easier.

The "best" way to get a 3d model from a 2d drawing is to manually model it yourself.

You can try this too..http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/2d_to_3d_tool/overview/

I am new to inventor, as I only took you basic introductory course.  I will use it (the 2d autocad) as a reference, and make a model in inventor....it will just take some time.  Thanks for everyone's help.
