It does not have to be a server as long as there are just a few licenses.

Interesting....how do install it? We have only one license, it would be nice to install it local.

There is a setup on the CD/DVD if you select "Install Tools and Utilities"
and "Network license manager".
You usually find it under this folder \support\nlm

Keep in mind that Windows client machines only allow 10 concurrent connections. Since you only have one license, you should be fine.

Not to start an argument or anything, but this topic was discussed a long time ago when some of us were forced off other License Manager platforms (Netware, anyone?) and wanted to use a Windows 2000 Pro (not server) box for license management. A lot of claims were made about the 10 connection limit, but nobody had actual facts. In my opinion, Windows Workstation licenses limit concurrent connections to *services provided by the O/S*, meaning file and print services. Add-on products like FlexLM are not limited, not by license and not by technical means, in my opinion. I did test a simple TCP/IP service with over 10 connections at a time, and I did run FlexLM which got more than 10 concurrent connections, on Windows 2000 Pro. So I believe it works, and I believe it complies with the license. Having said all that, server-class hardware and O/S are better suited for FlexLM, especially with large numbers of licenses.

let me start by reviewing what I did:
(xp pc,2009 ADT)

1.installed only the deployment onto a d: drive
2. installed the network lic tools onto the c: drive
3. got the lic file (with id/name from Adesk), save to d: drive
4. ran lmtools and got this message (see attachment).

I have it working fine on the old server, but it's not working on this PC...? thanks

Use Configuration using Services on the first tab. That will get you a Config Services tab. Configure this to point to your license file. Check the boxes and save the service, then start it.

GOT IT..!!

Next, is there a way to change the server name on existing installations..? In other words, I have revit, autocad, ect., installed under lic file with server/ID name "A" - How do change it to "B"..?

You can change the LICPATH.LIC in the application root. You can also create a system environment variable that points to the new license server. Or you can just launch the software and when it doesn't find it, it will ask you to specify the new license server system.

Prety simple.

I've rename the licpath.lic file, and you're right, when you launch, it's looking for a server name. When I give it the new name and click apply, it's changes it automatically to the original server name...any ideas..?

Search for the original server name in the registry.

here's the thing: if I have 20 revit installed on 20 PC, do I need to search 20 registry..??

Something is missing - Autodesk can you help please..??

No, if you find it one one, export the setting to a REG file and it can then
be imported on the other 19 in a login script or even manaually fairly
easily.

This is typicalyl why I use fully qualified domain names for license
servers. There's never a need to reconfigure the clients, just update a
single DNS entry.
