What permissions are required for Flexlm

Today I managed to get our license manager server (2000 server OS) to the
point where no one could obtain a license. I was attempting to tighten up
the access to the server by removing the "everyone" group, and first thing I
knew all the AutoCAD guys were out of business. So what does Flexlm expect
to be able to do as far as having read, write access, and where in the
directory structure is all this taking place?

I finally tried enough permission changes to get it functioning again. I'm
not exactly sure which change made it start working, but I think is was when
I gave write permission to one of the folders on drive C (Flexlm I think).

The license file itself is on drive D. I think the path was something like
d:\program files\autodesk license manager\license\ acad.lic. I tried every
kind of permission possible on that path and had no success at all.

Any advice appreciated, I don't want to get in another jam like the one I
was in today!

Thanks,
Tom

Tom -
I've not really experimented with this as I don't have the adlm files on anything that is
shared, but here's my "guess" on how it should work.

The everyone group shouldn't need any access to the adlm path. The only required rights
"should" be system and possibly whatever account the FlexLM service is running as (by
default the local system account) for the service to run (you're going to have trouble
looking at the logs because you are not the system, but it should still run).

Did you deny any rights or just remove groups. My guess is that you somehow denied rights
to access some folders/files (but it's a complete guess).

I'll try to play with some rights on my server today and see what happens.

Thanks Jason, No I didn't actually click on any of the "deny" boxes. But
going back and looking through the event viewer errors, I found where the
flexlm service wasn't started because "access was denied". So, it needs
something other than administrator rights, because it had admin full control
on the NTFS side as well as full on the share for every folder where it is
installed.

I didn't mess with it anymore today. They need to get a little work done 🙂
