R14.01 Hangs on Splash Screen

I have some users running Windows 2000 and Autocad R14.01 (network version).
Some of the users reside in a different building than where are license
server is.
Autocad was hanging on the splash screen on these computers, we had to shut
down the computer and restart.
I set the ACADSERVER variable on those machines and it solved the problem
with two users and at first I thought the third user was taken care of also
(Autocad started and ran just fine). But on the next day it hung up on the
splash screen again. I checked to make sure that the ACADSERVER was still
set and it is.

Since I don't have admin access (nor do the users), I set the ACADSERVER
variable in the Autoexec.bat instead of going through Control Panel, System,
Advanced Tab, environment variables, etc.

Now we also have people running on Win2k machines (Acad r14.01) that are in
the same building as the license server, they do not require the ACADSERVER
variable. We also have users in other buildings running Autocad R14.01 on
Win98, they too do not require the ACADSERVER variable.
It seems to be a combination of them being in a different building AND
running Win2K.

All users have"power users" access when running Win2K. I have also made
sure they have the newer adesksys.dll file. I have also been able to ping
the server from the client machine and vice versa.

One other note, when I first installed Autocad on the users machine that is
still experiencing the hang up, Autocad ran a few times (with out the
ACADSERVER variable). It wasn't until he started hanging up that I set the
environment variable and like I mentioned, it worked for one day.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Don -
Acadserver variable is required when the client machine is not in the same subnet as the adlm server.

You said that you can ping the server, but can you ping it by host name, or just by ip address (hostname is the lower case version
of the netbios name).

It sounds like dns problems, which are always, uhhh, ?fun? to trouble shoot. Try pinging by host name. I that doesn't work then the
adlm won't work. Since they are in another building I'm guessing that there is a router between the buildings. Is the router
blocking any udp ports (1422 perhaps??). Do you have dns servers on your network or are you relying on wins resolution to get the
server name?

You might try (with your admin's permission) creating (or actually modifying) the host file in the winnt\system32\drivers\etc folder
to include the ip address and hostname of the adlm server and see if the clients can find it there.

You might also try uypgrading since your R14s are officially dead in, oh, 32
days....
Just a friendly reminder, I don't think autodesk is kidding on this one.

Hi Jason, Thanks for the reply.

When I pinged the server and client machines I did it by host name and I was
able to ping the client from the server and the client was able to ping the
server.
The clients do not have static IP's but the server does.

Yes there is a router between all the buildings. As you can probably tell,
I'm not a networking guru but I have been on the phone with those that are.

To complicate things right now, our company is finally going through a
*long* awaited switch from an IBM Token Ring to Ethernet, which means I'll
have to reinstall the AdLM when they switch out the Token Ring card for an
Ethernet card (might happen today). Good timing considering we wont be able
to get authorization codes for R14 after the end of the month.

It is still baffling to me as to why we didn't have any problems when these
people were running Windows 98. It was the switch to Windows 2000 that
caused them to hang on the splash screen but by adding the ACADSERVER
variable it *fixed* the problem on two of the three.

Anyway, I forwarded your reply to our networking people and we'll see if
this helps them any at all.

Thanks again for your help.
Hopefully our transition from Token Ring to Ethernet goes smoothly (wish me
luck) 🙂

I know 😕
I'm in a rush mode right now to get a new machine installed for our ADLM -
the IS department is upgrading our network and the current machine does not
have an Ethernet card in it. My days of getting an authorization code are
numbered.

We have purchased 2000i but we are not ready to install it yet. Our IS dept
is also upgrading current Windows 98 machines to Windows 2000, I want to
wait for them to finish the upgrade prior to installing Acad2K. The Windows
upgrade involves them reimaging each work station, I don't want to have to
install Autocad and then have them reimage it. But we also have a few
compatibility problems between some databases and Windows 2K that need to be
resolved prior to the upgrade.

Sooooo, we'll continue to run R14 until we are ready to upgrade everything.

Have you upgraded adesksys.dll?

The original that comes with R14.01 doesn't work when workstations are in a
different subnet.

Yes I have upgraded the .sys file. The problem I'm getting is that it just
hangs on the splash screen, no error message and I have to reboot (only
Autocad hangs, the operating system is still working).

What is strange is it worked for one day and then quit.

Our company is going through some network upgrades and I think it has a lot
to do with it.
We have been running on a Token Ring but it is in the process of going to
Ethernet, so there's a lot of translations data is going through from Token
Ring to Ethernet, I suspect it is giving us grief. Once everyone is
switched over I'm hoping the problem goes away.
