Problems with saving file (Unable to save <drawing name> as it is being

The users get the message:
Unable to save as it is being accessed by another session

I have seen the posts on the Autodesk site that deal with this issue but
none of them really apply. Windows 98 is the workstation. I understand
that AutoCAD no longer does the file locking for the application and lets
the operating system do this. When the error occurs, Inbox and Word lock up
and forces a power down reboot of the OS. Netwatcher has also been installed
on the machines to determine who has what open etc. per Autodesk's
recommendation. These errors seem to occur even when no one else is trying
to access the file.
Thanks in Advance Everyone

W98 is notorious for this problem. Check to make sure that you have the latest drivers for
your network card (on both the client and the server). The problem as I understand it is a
"timing" problem. Autocad's complicated save method requires that the server respond
within a certain time limit or it reads the drawing as being "read only".
This "timing" issue can be caused by network card drivers, un-responsive (or slowly
responsive) server, or excess network traffic. These are very hard to troubleshoot. I have
a friend, who was having this problem and ended up having to move all of his autocad data
from one server to another to get rid of the problem. The two servers were very similar,
but the one that he moved the data to was not loaded as heavily as the other one. Since
the move he's not had a problem. Was the problem with the server itself being overloaded?
Was it the network segment that it was on had to much traffic? Was it the nic driver on
the old server? We don't know, but it is fixed, so try some of those things.

One more thing. I've noticed that you are munging your email address (which I completely
agree with) but, I recommend that you munge your domain name rather than your alias. If
you put the munge on the left of the @ sign, spam is still delivered to your domain, so
your mail admin has to deal with it, and it still costs you band width. If the munge is on
the right side of the @ it never makes it to your domain, so it only costs the spammer
bandwidth (which I also agree with).

Sorry that I don't have a "definitive" answer on how to fix the file locking problem.
