Merge dialog box

I am going crazy trying to get started with 3ds Max. To begin with, I tried to open the battlefield file to start the first tutorial, but all I get is "file open failed". I went to the solutions section of the "Area", and I got identifying and fixing corrupted elements in scenes. I read the instructions, but when I got to directive number 2, it says "in the Merge dialog box, select half of your objects. Well, I have searched every nook and cranny trying to find a "Merge dialog box", and I can't locate it. I tried erasing all of the downloaded files and reinstalling them, but I get the same results. Can someone tell me where the Merge dialog box is, so I can at least try to fix the problem? Thanks!
