ACAD 2012 continues to fail installation. I have installed two separate DirectX updates and Internet Explorer 8. This computer is running Windows XP (32 bit) w/ service pack 3. I've included the installation error log below. How can I get ACAD 2012 loaded on this computer? Thanks!

There should be another installation .log file in your %TEMP% folder with more information.
The file is too large for me to upload here (23 MB) possibly because we tried the install multiple times after multiple Windows & DirectX updates.
You should be able to zip it small enough. Read the file yourself and locate the failure if you still cannot post it.
Your log files show an error 1603 when trying to install AutoCAD 2012. Error 1603 is a Windows installer error that is somewhat generic, but usually has to do with a read/write problem during installation. It can be caused by an antivirus program. Please try doing the following:
Reboot under a selective startup:
Delete your temporary files:
If you are using an installation disk for AutoCAD, make a folder on your desktop and copy the entire contents of the disk into the folder. Run the setup from the folder to do the install.
Try to install AutoCAD.
If it still fails, use this article from Microsoft to set the proper permissions on your system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834484
Try also logging in to the Administrator user account and then doing the install.
To put the computer back to a normal startup, open up MSCONFIG again and click "Normal startup" under the General tab. Click OK and then Restart.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue for you.
I tried the selective startup and deleted the temporary files as you recommended, yet was still unable to get ACAD 2012 to install. I do not believe the permissions are a problem on this computer because I had installed Revit Architecture 2012 just prior to attempting the installation of ACAD 2012.
Even though it is Window XP that you have, I would try logging in under the Administrator user account, just to be sure. Keep in mind that this is the account named "Administrator" and not another user account with admin rights.
If this doesn't help, see if that Microsoft article is of any assistance.
After that, it will be time to do a complete clean reinstall. I would reboot again under a selective startup and then follow the instructions at this link to make sure you remove all Autodesk software before installing again:
http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=TS45252
Good luck!
Hello aliciaradcliff6634,
I wanted to follow up with you on this discussion thread. Please let me know if any of the above helped. If it did, please click the "Accept as Solution" button. Thank you!
I do not have administrator access as I am just an assistant to our IT guy. I have emailed our IT guy and director of operations to let them know that this is the next thing that must be tried. Each user is given administrative access on his/her computer so the administrative access should not have been the problem. Besides I had installed Revit Architecture 2012 on this system just prior to attempting the ACAD 2012 install.
Thanks for your help.
Alicia Radcliff
Hi Alicia,
Did you ever have any luck installing AutoCAD 2012?
Bryce,
The only option left for me to try is reinstalling the operating system, which is not a task that I have the permission to do. At this point, we'll continue using an older version of ACAD on that computer along with the latest version of Revit, which installed fine.
Thanks for following up!
Alicia
Thanks for the follow up. I'm sorry the install was causing so much trouble. Instead of formatting and reinstalling the system, you might try running a repair of Windows. I've done that a couple times myself over the years. All my installed programs stayed intact. I just had to run a ton of Windows Updates again.
My log says
"Installation operation completed successfully.

But dialog box comes up on screen as insallation failed?
Any help?
Thanks,
Mark
Good morning Mark!
Yes. The install dialog box, that lists the programs and puts a green check mark by the ones that installed correctly and a red "x" by the ones that didn't, showed a red "x" next to the ACAD 2012 installation.
Thanks!
Alicia
Ah yes Alicia. So have you been able to get it installed yet?
If so, what did you do?
Thanks,
Mark
Mark,
No, we have not been able to get ACAD 2012 installed. At this point, we'll continue using an older version of ACAD on that computer along with the latest version of Revit, which installed fine. When time permits, I will try Bryce's latest recommendation about running a repair on Windows.
Thanks!
Alicia
Thanks again Alicia.
Bryce, I am running Windows 7 64 bit.
Do you suggest I try the windows repair method also?
Thank you,
Mark
With Windows 7, try turning off User Account Control (UAC):
You should also right-click the setup.exe for AutoCAD and choose "Run as administrator" to start it.
The 1603 error seems to always revolve around invalid permissions. Try logging in as the local Administrator too. After that, repairing Windows is probably in order.
Thanks Bryce, I'll try this tonight & give my results.
I have been doing the right click-run as administrator.
Mark
