ACAD 2000 Deployment problems

We have created a Deployment Tree for AutoCAD 2000 installations on a shared novell drive (no spaces in the share name). This went smoothly. However when we run the setup.exe from a WIN NT client without administrator rights, the setup fails. The message box indicates that we need administrative rights to install from the deployment tree. This would seem to defeat the purpose of the deployment tree, if regular users cannot install their own software. We did not have this problem with R14.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Rick,

This is very clear in the manual and in the error message.  You
have to have Administrative rights to install AutoCAD and all NSW does
is bundle it up so that it can be silent.  Then the user's won't have
to answer the install questions.  The administrative rights are needed
to update microsoft files and write to the registry.  BTW, this is
true of many software packages.

Hope this helps to clear things up.

Thanks Bud for your response to my question. However I have to disagree with your reply. The AutoCAD manual does clearly state in the single user installation section that this install must be done by an administrator. But in the network deployment installation section it clearly states that a "user" can install the deployment. It does not state that administrator rights are required. This morning I performed the same deployment tree setup using R14 and 2000. The R14 deployment could be installed by a user without administrator rights. The 2000 version could not. We use Novells ZENworks to install AutoCAD on Novell client PC's and wanted to use the AutoCAD deployment tree for our non-Novell client PC's. We did this successfully with R14 but cannot do it with 2000. In the meantime we are trying to find a way around the problem with A2k deployment. I was hoping there was a patch available to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Hi Rick,

Sorry for not getting back to you until now.  I am out on Vacation;-)
and posting from my home account.

There is nothing to disagree with.  What I told you is how it works;-).
R14 did not need Administrative rights to install anything under NT.
But AutoCAD 2000 does.   It is installing several Microsoft products
at the same time and will require administrative rights to do this.
Also there are some core files that are being updated on the Operating
system that also need administrative rights.   We did this per
Microsoft.   There is no way around this.   It is a
requirement of AutoCAD 2000.  Keep in mind that a deployment is really
just a wrapper for a standalone install.  You will need to give administrative
rights to do this.

Take care.
