AutoDesk Software and 64bit Intel/Windows

When will AutoDesk recompile their software in a new release/upgrade to
accomodate 64bit platforms? With Intel's 64bit hardware and Windows XP
64bit abilities, it would be nice to have Map and LDD take advantage of this
(I currently work with 2GB of RAM and would love to buy systems to work with
much more). Just want to make sure AutoDesk software can take advantage of
it.

I believe the viz program may be there already (true?). What about AutoCAD
Map and Civil Series? When will this happen?

Thanks,
David

If you are truly concerned about it, then maybe you might want to look at
AMD's latest stab at 64bit processing. I believe it was called the
Clawhammer series.

Rumor has it that they can support 64bit and 32bit applications seemlessly.

Might be able to get a more wallet friendly price from them as well.

Yes this is looking very promising, the AMD clawhammer will have native
64bit & 32 bit support, while Intel's 64bit chip will be 64bit native and
have to emulate for 32bit apps.
The only question is will AMD ever release the dam things, every time I look
at the AMD roadmap the release dates get bumped back another quarter.

Agreed, it is looking a bit like vaporware.

But on the flip side, I would rather have a product that is late, but works
correctly then a product that was rushed to the assembly line.

Just my $0.02,

(P.S. speaking of delays, has anybody heard anything about the latest Nvidia
chip? The one that is supposed to trash the Radeon 9700?)

Yeah, I heard something last week. Just can't remember where. Tom's
Hardware maybe? From the sounds of it, nVidia's new chip will definitely
trash the Radeon 9700 (especially since the GeForce4 Ti 4600 already has
almost the performance of the Radeon).

When 64-bit chips will be widely available and as cheap as today's XP
and P4 CPUs. And when you can go 64-bit hardware without taking a
beating using your old 32-bit apps due to internal thunking.

But Intel's "Itanium" just isn't cutting the high fidelity cheese in
performance circles anyway (even using 64-bit software). Itanium II is
on the block, and AMD is betting the company on their 64-bit/32-bit
solution, so there's hope.

It's just not happening anytime soon.

Thanks, Matt. I guess I'll have to be patient and go ahead with some
purchase plans for hardware excluding this possibility for another year.
Just didn't want to spend another 10-20,000 on a new computer and have 64
bit stations available with a release from AutoDesk to accomodate a few
months later.

You know saying stuff like that will get you beat by the guys running
PII-500s, right?
Seriously, how do you make a 20K workstation without talking about a Sun
box?

!! That must be Canadian$ !! I'd have a hard time specing a workstation
that pricey in US$. What kind of work do you do that can justify that
kind of horsepower?

Gold plated wire ties on the cables? Execpt they would conduct electricity.

Have you ever tried to spec a workstation on Dell's website with max dual
processors and hard drives, 2-4GB of ram, and max video card? Don't forget
the dual monitors. The price has been about the same for the past several
years. I work with lots of GIS over large areas. Still not happy with how
sluggish things can be sometimes -- hoping 64 bit world really opens the
pipeline.

Hi Dick,

No, it'sUS (see my previous post). Try to work With GIS applications over
larger areas than a typical sized tract and you'll see what I mean (Aerial
photos, etc.). It's not your typical CAD party.

People keep telling me they'll never make a machine fast enough for me.
That's probably true, but maybe the 64 bit world will settle me down for the
time being.

I know the pain. David. Everyone wants one map/dwg with everything available
(roads, powerlines, customer location, parcels, serial numbers to every
piece of equipment, customers name/phone no. etc ect )of an area that covers
2700 sq miles. and opens on the computer in less than 30 seconds.

Yeah if you go for the Wildcat video card, you really break the bank.

I've "built" some systems on Dell's site, just wishful thinking, and I've
had them in the $20K-$25K range before.
