Very simple.  Although, typically, folks will use a
dual head video card, I am running 2 cards.  This was fairly easy to set up
and do.  The most difficult part is figuring out the logistics of your
card's capabilities and the array of settings that suit your needs.

I rarely span both screens with a drawing, but
occasionally do.  The real asset I am fond of is using the second monitor
for palettes, content browser and properties box.  Plus maintaining
multiple applications (VizR, OE, IE, etc) in a second monitor is EXTREMELY
efficient.

Dual monitors was a cheap investment with a fairly quick
ROI that has completely changed my work environment.

You know, this sounds goofy but when I started with 2.62 I had a second
black and white monitor and card so that I could keep the text screen on it. It
took too darn long to do a regen when flipping between graphics and text.

Sounds like we are back to square 1, although with a more expensive card,
monitor, and OS 😉

I use an Nvidia Quadro4 700 XGL, which allows you
to run 2 monitors at the same time.  I have two 19" CRTs
side-by-side.  I love it but there is a three inch gap between the two
viewable screens.

I have eleven workstations setup with them, mostly using Appian Video Cards, but we've been moving to Matrox and Nvidia
Cards lately.

I even have a couple of Quads and Tri-monitor setups for a couple of folks.

We're were running these a few years ago, before they were mainstream and the cost of monitors were still up there.
I've had a few folks resist the change, but when it came time to upgrade their machine, they were sure to ask about
keeping their second monitor :c)

There have been many more improvements vs complications during the implementation of dual screen workstations. The
problems were occuring for the most part, early on vs now, where the setup is very simple. The newer hardware is being
built with the idea that Dual Monitors (should) are the norm.

I actually got it through the Purchaing system originally by doing a ROI on PRINTER usage based on having two
applications up on the Montiors vs only being able to view a single window (application) at a time. AutoCAD and Excel
in our case. The users didn't need to take the time to print out one application while looking at another, which
happened quite frequently. Figuring in the savings of Paper, Printer usage and how much time was spent at sending,
waiting and retrieving the prints from the printers was a fairly simple task and easy for management to grasp. The
setup paid for itself in something like 8 months, this back when the extra Monitor was going for $1500 and the video
card was another $800.

bobb

P.S. I also had the same setup with Dual Monitors, only I was on Rel 10 on Unix, using an additional frambuffer for the
second screen, a greyscale version for the Text screen.
