Erratic mouse wheel zoom

Running Civil 3D 2013 64bit. Mouse is a Logitech M500 corded laser mouse.

The mouse wheel usually functions fine for zooming; however, every so often it will start zooming erratically, making it impossible to work without reverting to manual zoom commands. After a while it will then start functioning normally. I can't see any logic to it.

I've tried this with another mouse (Logitech, different model) and the same thing occurs.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have a Logitech Wireless Mouse and every so often the slightest touch on the wheel causes a mega zoom that is uncontrollable. I have the Layer Properties Manager and Toolspace Palettes open on my secondary monitor and by closing the Layer and/or Toolspace Palette and reopening the Zoom functionality is restored.

No idea of the whys and wherefores but it works for me

Thanks. Tried closing /reopening paletted which made no difference. However, I am running two monitors and when I swiched to one only the zoom reverted back to normal...

Incredibly annoying whatever the casue.

Have you tried updating the drivers for the mouse and video?

All drivers up-to-date.

After encountering the problem again with only one screen my latest 'fix' is simply to hit minimise then restore... which seems to work.

(until it gets wise to that little trick)

If it weren't for the fact that you've already tried another mouse I'd blame it on a sticky scroll wheel. I'm just guessing but do you have a non-Logitec mouse to try? I've seen a few anomalies when zooming but never anything as bad as what you're getting.

Since minimizing and restoring seems to reset it. It sounds like a video problem. If you're running Win 7 with an Aero theme. Try changing to a basic or classic theme.

Thanks Allen.

I'm currently working away but I believe I'm just running Win 7 Home Basic on the home laptop, with no fancy themes.

I can try another mouse although the main reason I recently purchased a new Logitech was in the hope of alleviating this problem!

I believe the Aero theme is default, so if you've never checked or changed it, that's probably what you're running.  Try right-clicking on the desktop, go to personalize and see what you can find.

This must be a Logitech problem.  I've got two different Logitech wireless mice on two different computers and both computers have this problem with the extreme mouse wheel zooming at random times.  Some days it never happens.  Some days it happens 3-5 times an hour; I haven't found or noticed any patterns to make it occur.

What I do to get back to normal is simply open the "Mouse & Keyboard Settings" application (the Logitech factory app) and from the main window just click the Apply button.  Immediately my mouse wheel zoom is corrected.  Some days I just keep that program open so I can flip back to it quickly to correct the problem.  I guess this resends any settings to Windows?  All I know is that it works like a champ.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. At least it's good to know there are a few of us with this problem!

I've got the same issue with a Reaper Edge. Same with a Logitech and Cherry mouse. At my course in University a few people are having this issue. It only happens in Perspective Mode. Its very annoying... I just zoom out with one move back and I cant even see the object I am working on anymore. Using Alt Ctrl MMB instead but I hope its gonna be fixed anytime...

Edit: ok I used search and didnt notice I am in the wrong topic, for me its a problem of 3ds Max but exactly the same

i have the exact same logitech sporadic uncontrollable zoom wheel scenario. however i have found another partial temporary "fix" ... by merely going to autodesk forum, to look for solution, then going back to acad, Voila, it is working again. !! "The Magic Forum" solution !!! also if i have multiple dwgs open, they all screw up together, and come back sensible together. maybe touching in another app is all it takes. would be nice to find a real solution windows 8.1 latest logitech drivers autocad 2014

I have the same erratic zoom problem.  It started when I updated the Logitech drivers and install Logitech SetPoint to program my thumb buttons on the mouse to [Enter] and [Esc].  I found the following workarounds will temporarily fix the issue.

1)  Open Logitech SetPoint and click apply,

2) or open Civil 3D forums,

3) or drop the computer off a ten story building.

I don't think Option 3 actually solves anything, but it certainly makes me feel better.

I used to use the Logitech M705 Mouse and never had an issue. However, about four months ago I purchased a Logitech Gaming Mouse, G700s, and the gaming mice have their own drivers that are separate from SetPoint. I have no idea what causes it, but sometimes the mouse just becomes extremely erradic. I have to open the Logitech Gaming Software, click on the Customize Pointer Settings, and it fixes it for a while. This only happens with C3D, not with any other program. I also have two displays, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I determined that my erratic mouse wheel zoom issue is being caused by Setpoint.  I uninstalled Setpoint, and all my zoom problems disappeared.  Of course, I can't use the additional mouse and keyboard buttons.  However, the mouse and keyboard still functions as a generic mouse and keyboard without Setpoint.

try my "solution" / workaround simply click in any other window, other than acad... then return to acad and mouse zoom returns to normal all i have to do is click elsewhere (anywhere) and mouse reverts to proper operation. -hope it works for you setpoint (various mice) acad 2014 win 8.1 it is so easy that you can continue work almost uninterrupted. -however logitech need to find a solution for us. it only happens with acad for me so far

It was happening so frequently that I had to click to another window every 30 seconds.  I couldn't get anything done because I was always clicking to another window.  It was interfering with my workflow, and therefore, I removed it.

I think I resolved my problem.

1)  In Setpoint, under "Game Settings, Speed Acceleration", toggle the Speed and Acceleration to "OS implementation".

2)  In Setpoint, under "Pointer and Scrolling Settings", uncheck "Enable Smooth Scrolling".

So far, I haven't any issues with erratic zooming in Autocad with the Setpoint scrolling settings disabled.

I have read through this entire erratic mouse list and tried them all.  The only one that solves the problem is removing the set point software.
