Which/whose version of Linux? Are there more Linux daily office users than
there are Apple/Mac users yet?

I Think Redhat Linux 7.2 it probably the most widely recongnized version of Linux in the corporate user world. My impression from what I have read is that the (Linux) os has a very large user base. 70 million world wide. This would include all versions of linux as well as unix. The Current ammount of Linux users is on the rise while Windows and apple users appear to be growing slower. Autodesk has always had huge interests in the (world) cad market. It would only make sense (to me) that Autodesk would consider breathing life back into its unix version via linux. Any thoughts?

I would love to have a seat of ACAD that ran on linux mandrake although I
doubt this has even been considered by Autodesk. If the promise of Lindows
(http://www.lindows.com) holds true that could be very interesting

I would love to see a Unix version of Acad too, and since Mac OS X has a
Unix kernel.... 🙂

Linux corporate use needs to explode, and installed 'registered' seats need
to seriously out sell Apple's OS before any company will look at Linux as a
money maker. Notice the catch phrase 'registered'.
My 2cents worth.

In the mean time, keep an eye out for LinuxCAD: starting to improve
drastically over earlier versions.

Does there exist ANY good modelers for Linux at all?

I wouldn't hold your breath - there used to be a UNIX AutoCAD (12), but they
dropped it when they went to R13. There probably wasn't enough interest to
justify developing it. Besides, AutoCAD relies heavily on COM, which wasn't
implemented in Linux last I heard...

Not much 'good' product out there yet: seems mostly to be geekware.

Yeah, I know, I remember R10 and R12. Sometimes I like to dream that I
could use one of my favorite programs on my favorite platform though....

Doesn't matter. The different versions of Linux are not like the different
versions of Windows. If a program is written to work on Linux it should
work on *every* distribution.

If not, its probably really close.

Thanks for your spin on things LINUX.

Funny how most of my 'old' Linux software does not run on my current builds
on Linux 😉
Remember: SHOULD (on paper) and DOES (in real life) never happens in any OS,
Linux or not, at least IMHO.

Ahh, yes, but all you need to do is recompile.

I noticed and downloaded a 3d Max type software called blender. I couldn't figure out how to use it in the 10 minutes I played with it, but it appears to be a pretty full featured modeling / rendering / animating product that will run under several OS's including Linux. Blender (like Linux) is open source code.

I saw this post & it piqued my curiosity. An open source 3d Max? I figured it would be a cheap knock off like a lot of the 'free' cad/3d modeling stuff is. I downloaded the Windows version & played with it for 2 hours. The tutorials helped, especially since I haven't messed with 3d studio in a long while. I'm definitely impressed & I'm going to start my own render tests to see what it can do. The image gallery at blender3d.org makes blender look like a very possible rival to accurender or 3d max. open source & dotslasher's seem to be every expanding.
