Viewport black and white and blown out render

Hi all

I'm fairly new to 3DS max and have run into some problems trying to import a model I made previously in Blender.

The shading in the viewport is very dark and a quick render is totally off as well. I haven't had either of these things happen before when creating something to begin with in 3DS, but in this circumstance I have to use the imported .fbx model. The only time the viewport looks okay is when I change the view to 'faceted' which isn't ideal (middle image). I'd really like to solve the problems here on my own but haven't struck any luck so far.

My file is here on Google Drive, uploading attachment isn't working for me: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mkqLMLb8nJwEbv1I1iWHmtAY-xwRhhtB/view?usp=sharing

Really appreciate any guidance!

I opened your file. Not entirely sure why this problem has happened. I thought it was a normals problem at first but flipping them didnt solve it. However, if you apply a shell modifier to each model and set the vaule to 0 this fixes the problem.

Hope this helps 🙂

Thank you kindly for the suggestion, I tried checking out my normals as
well to no avail. The shell modifier helps, however it's giving me
flickering normals at 0 but 0.01 makes things appear better :).

Hopefully can get some ideas re the rendering! I wonder if this just
happens with all fbx imports and I'm missing something?

Glad that helped a bit. It's not common for this to happen with fbx files so I'm guessing it's something that's maybe been checked or unchecked in the fbx settings when it was exported, but I don't export fbx files too often so can't say for sure. Have you tried exporting as a .obj instead?

Hmm good point, it's the same with the obj version as well actually. How weird.

I'm trying different fbx (and obj) export options but not seeing a change, most of it pertains to things like 'apply modifiers' and scale settings, smoothing etc. I've tried checking smoothing groups on the import end too.

Is there something in the obj import options that looks off to you? This is the default.

SOLVED THE ISSUE: What fixed the shading was detaching some of the objects (such as the table) and flipping normals only of those affected items like the half wall, floor, rug, table etc. The blown out render was due to Logarithmic exposure settings being enabled under Rendering > Exposure control, so I unchecked Active but you can also change it to another setting like auto for a bit of brightness but not a total wash out.

Thank you to the kind hugolafisques on Reddit for making these suggestions to me.

Also double check your scale settings for import, my model was very small due to a mismatch in units which will affect lighting as well.
