tyFlow does not render correctly in Arnold.

Hi All.

More and more people are using tyFlow particle system plugin. Its amazing.

But for me, not having Vray and therefore using Arnold for rendering, there is an annoying problem.

When using smooth, Turbosmooth etc. Arnold does not render it. Scanline does tho.

The images below are the same scene, showing the render difference.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Or if Autodesk are working on fixing that problem?

Does the 'explicit normals' in Turbosmooth do anything? Another wild guess is adding an Arnold Properties modifier and maybe using its subdivision. If nothing helps: Are you working with a static or animated mesh?

A while back I had an animated Tyflow particle that didn't render correctly using Arnold. The solution was baking out to a point cache, but Alembic would probably have worked too. If your mesh is static you could also just make a copy and collapse into an editable poly.

I am not sure if it's Tyflow or Arnold that are supposed to resolve this if it is indeed a confirmed bug. Though perhaps it would make sense that the plugin devs contact the Arnold/Autodesk team

'Explicit normals' does nothing and Tyson Ibele, the tyFlow creator is aware of the Arnold render problem.

In another scene he told me to use tyMesher to bypass the problem.

It is a tyFlow/Arnold issue.

And yes, the problem might be a Dev level problem.

It is just a test animation where I squeeze a Torus knot flat. (scene file is attached)

I use the free version of tyFlow (for now) and can not export cache.

For static objects you can collapse to poly/mesh and handle it that way. Like you mention.

I can see the Turbosmooth effect fine in viewport, but Arnold Render does not register it.

@jgjYRRKE if you are able to collapse to poly/mesh then I think you should be able to save out to Point Cache too. For that add a Point Cache modifier, locate an output folder and configure bake settings. Or a Alembic (which is a file export like .fbx and .obj). Admittedly when I was last working with Tyflow it was on the free Beta which lasted up to Max 2022, and this had no limitations (in other words, same as paid)

I can export particles as Alembic mesh or point.

But that gives me an object made of many particles, not a mesh I can smooth out.

Point Cache mod do not seem to work.

I guess I will switch to Vray at some point, hope for a render fix or use the tyMesher bypass solution (image)

Thank you for your time Thor :slightly_smiling_face:
