When I do a render where I define the output file, tga-files have a bugged alpha channel. The alpha channel is there, but the whole image is opaque. If I save the same image from the render window, the alpha channel is saved correctly. How do I fix this?
Have you verified, that 32 Bits-per-Pixel is checked? When setting the Save File name in the Render Setup/Common dialog, if you just click on an existing TGA file, the renderer takes the settings of that file regardless of what the RenderView is showing.
"the whole image is opaque" --> how do you tell? I.e. what software do you use to check the alpha channel?

http://scripts.breidt.netThose are exactly the settings I used. There wouldn't be an alpha channel at all with the lower Bits-per-Pixel values if I have understood correctly.
I use GIMP to edit the Targa-files. It shows that there is an alpha-channel, but there are no transparent areas in the resulting Targa-file.
- can you post such a TGA file for us to check?
- can you post a simple .max you use to render such TGA?
- what version of 3ds Max are you using?

http://scripts.breidt.netAre you sure you have saved TGA files in both cases? I don't see any differences in my TGA files:
However, if I save my rendering as PNG, Photoshop reads the Alpha channel as transparency channel:
