Material by element modifier

I have assigned a multi/subobject material with three materials to an imported geometry and applied the "material by element" modifier to it in order to give these boxes random colors.

Unfortunately the randomness is applied to the sides of the boxes. Please see the attachment. I expected that the boxes would be seen as elements, but obviously the sides of the boxes are considered elements (as well as polygons)

Any suggestion how to solve this issue would be appreciated.

Hi. The "Material by Element" modifier works the sub-object level called Elements. An Element is a part of an object that is detached from the other parts (if more than one Element). So this means, that the sides of your box are not welded together with the rest of it.

So to have one box being one element, you need to weld all vertices.

Hope it helps

Well, excellent! I'd been looking at the wrong sub-object level all the time. Thanks a lot!
