Is Matte/Shadow material working with ART render 2017?

I am getting unexpected results with the matte/shadow material and ART renderer.

In the middle image below, I am expecting pure black outside of the book and shadow...
Why am I getting this greyish value?

Is there a workaround?

Thanks for any help.

Hello Stephen,

I'm seeing the same problem 3 years later.  Did you ever solve this?  I believe it is a bug (one of soo many), but have you found a workaround?

Thanks!

Tom

Matte shadow with art  works fine with HDRI.

Which type of lighting scheme do you have?

Just a sun positioner.  Was to be a very simple render that would be composited in Premiere.  I ended up doing a second rendering using scanline to get the proper shadow alpha and just layered them in Premiere.  This created quite a bit of extra work.  The result I got using ART was similar to OP, with a splatter of white noise emanating from the shadow.
