Appling Material to one instance of multiple objects.

We have a new person join my department that has the identical set up to myself and other designer.  The issue is when applying materials on his computer he has a different behavior and we haven't identified the setting that might be causing it.

I work for a furniture dealer so we provide renderings from max to clients.  We build the models in AutoCAD Architectural as its easier handling revisions and it ties into other programs used for ordering product.

Since there are many revisions we will reference the dwg file so that we can reload the file and update any changes that occur.

What happens is for example I apply material to chair back only the back select will change have the material applied.

When he opens up the same file and applies the material his will apply to the back of every chair of the same block.  This makes it difficult to have the same product with multiple colors as he has to go back and redefine blocks with several changes for each version of the object he wants.

Before we got the current laptops our desktops exhibited the same behavior that his laptop.  We just didn't realize that it was possible to have a different behavior until we switched to the laptops.  However we never found setting to change between the two.

The image attached is a visual on how this might work in a finished render.  The green and blue chairs are the same block in AutoCAD.  On my system its a simple select what I want to change material and I am good.  He either has to have them all one color or go back to AutoCAD and modify the block creating a separate version for the blue ones.

We are using Max 2020, Arnold 4.1x and identical HP zbook laptops.

Hopefully I explained the situation clearly enough if not feel free to ask for clarification.

In the Material Editor click Options at the top and uncheck Propagate Materials to Instances.  With that enabled, applying a material to one object applies it to all instances of that object.  Turn that off and each instance can have it's own material.
