What usually causes "STL Check" Modifier to crash?

I have a mesh with about 300K verts. It REALLY doesn't like working with ProBoolean or ProCutter so I'm pretty sure it's not watertight. When I run STL Check, the program just freezes forever. I will never get an error dialog no matter how long I wait. So I always have to manually end process.

However, STL Check works on a generic sphere.

I've tried exporting my 300K mesh to .obj, re-importing, and then using multires to reduce verts by 10% to see if that might get it to work but it still crashes 3ds Max.

Any suggestions on what might be causing STL Check to crash?

My approach would be to find the potential problem area(s) first.  I would start by perhaps subtracting a big box from 90% of one end of the model, convert the result to an editable poly then do the check.  Repeat the process using Boolean intersect on another 10% of the model.  Repeat as necessary to learn more where potential "leaks" may be.

Your suggestion worked! Even just splitting the mesh in half was enough to make both sides STL-checkable.
