Sweep modifier inconsistent with Create Shape From Selection

I created a simple plane with 4 length segments, converted it to editable poly, in edge mode selected all the edges and hit Create Shape From Selection.

To the resulting Spline I added a sweep modifier but the orientation of the selected (preset or custom) shape is pointing forward/backward and shifts left/right (see screenshots).

It is as if the edges have 'normals' pointing in various directions. How can I make the sweep consistent so I get a result like a window frame.

I think it's not normal of the shape, but order of its points that controls frame direction in this case.

Create your shapes manually always going CW or CCW, whichever produces proper result.

Just pointing out there is also the Lattice modifier... maybe it is an alternative to get that kind of geometry?

PS: If you convert a 4x4 plane to poly, then select all edges and convert to shape, and then select individual splines in that new shape you can see the messy result... they are all "zig-zag" shaped.. I very much doubt this will do any good.

If you select each edge loop in the original plane and convert that to an individual shape, the results are much more consistent.

Here is a test doing exactly this, plus welding the four corner points:

As an alternative: have you considered using the new Array modifier?

Thanks for the insights and suggestions. Unfortunately with my limited level of 3ds Max modelling, the Create Shape from Selection is not as easy as it seems.. I will try the suggested options.
