subobjects on boolean operands are hidden

Hi.

I'm confused about the proper workflow with booleans and operands:
When I create a compound boolean or also in the boolean modifier: I try to work on the operands (selecting their subobjects in the modifier stack) in order to do some modeling on the subobjects, like just moving vertices etc. All vertices are invisible. I can select and manipulate them, but I have to guess where they might be.

I can work around this by using "Live Reference", but I'd like to keep the scene uncluttered and the operands hidden. Am I missing something? Or is this simply not a "valid workflow"?
