Smart Extrude not working

Hello I have 3ds Max 2021 v 23.0.  I am having issues getting the Smart Extrude function to work.  I am doing the following:

1. Create a cube divided into 3 sections on each side

2. Convert to Editable Poly

3. Select Polygon (face)

4. Hold Shift and Push inward

When Hold Shift it trys to select all faces in a loop around the cube

When I drag inward, I get a dialog box asking to clone the face plane

Do I need to activate something or change settings?  Thanks for your help!

Hmm, are you clicking on the the 'gumball' with shift-lmb, or just clicking anywhere on the selected faces?

Smart Extrude is not working in Edit Poly Modifier - it cannot inward extrude on the edges.

With Smart Extrude "Reset by RMB" is not working very often. Even UNDO may not work, ecpecially with Edit Poly Modifier, moreover it can lead to mesh crushes.

Smart Extrude is most Stupid and Buggy feature whch is always near due to Stupid "Shift+Drag" combinaion.

Check to be sure you have the necessary Product Updates installed to 3ds Max.  Update 2 specifically.

Hi! Seems like there is another problem with Smart Extrude - It does not work with non-parallel edges when a polygon is extruded inwards! I understand that it removes only coplanar faces during the extrusion but there could be an alternative mode (pressing Shift+Alt, for example) to constrain the polygon to move along those edges.
