Sliding a vertex along an edge - PAST the end of the edge

I used to be able to do this in Max 2014/2016 but it seems since 2018 this functionality has gone away and it's a pain in the arse.
I want to be able to slide a vertex along one of it's own edges - PAST where the edge ends.
I used to be able to do this by changing snap mode to edges, selecting the vert, locking selection and then dragging along the edge highlighted in red. The vertex would happily slide out along the dotted red line signifying the extension of the original edge. This no longer works and it's now - it seems - impossible to slide a vertex along and edge beyond the edge limit.
Any idea how I do this now? I mean without building a hundred 'helper' splines and sliding along those instead?
