I need a specific kind of selection method. Think that I have a helix with several turns and turns are relatively close to eachother. I need something like soft selection. But whenever I increase the fallof range of soft selection, it effects the upper stories which are in the range of fallof -naturally.
What I need is something extending the selection only through the path but act like soft selection.

Edge distance might work, but I think what you are looking for is more like Spline FFD. This maxscript will allow you to select an edge loop, the applies a spline to that loop, with multiple control points specified by you, which allows you to manipulate the edge loop you selected with FFD-like control. Take a look, and maybe it will be of use.
