Quick swap models

Beginner .  I'm modeling out a small city block. I'd like to do the layout and rough design in all basic BOX models. Then 'quick' replace them with the actual models. In my last program I could simply select the 'object' then change the model- file name to any model in the file directory. This would then replace the BOX model with the new one I  name selected...

How can I do this type of quick swap in 3ds max?

Thank you

Hmmm.... What was your "last program"? Just trying to understand the workflow you're talking about. AFAIK there's no simple way to do this in Max, but maybe a bit more info about your "last program" could bring forward some pointers/ideas...

I don't use these feature myself, but if you you tube "3ds max replace"

many many different styles of workflow come up.

i'm sure one will suit you.

Perhaps even the Application Menu > Import > Replace function is what you want?

Hi;

You can simply use Substitute Modifier for this action.

To apply, please follow the flow below;

-Select your "box"

-Go to Modify > Modifier List > Substitute

-Under the Substitute options, Click on Pick Scene Object or Pick XRef Object (if your building model is in your scene already, pick scene, if your model is in an X-Ref File, pick xref)

-Select your object / or file

-Your box will be replaced with the desired model / object.

Regards;
