problems with selecting objects and polys in 2021.2

Not sure if this is an issue with 2021.2 or 2021 in general but I started noticing it recently.

In the past, if you had two overlapping objects, or overlapping/occluding geometry in the same object, it was possible to select the object that was "behind" the other in screen space by clicking several times.

suppose I had this geometry made of boxes and wanted to select the bottom, unused faces of the top two boxes, without taking the geometry apart.

I'd just click on the top a number of times and the selection would cycle between the faces below the cursor until it reached the one I wanted to delete. since we don't have face-center points like maya and blender this was the only way to select certain faces in this type of self-occluding geometry.

now if you double click it just selects the entire element.

the same goes for object, I had two coplanar objects occupying the exact same space and 3ds max only allowed me to select one of them in the viewport, no matter what I did.

There should be a way to get this functionality back, this is seriously hurting my workflow.
