Placing Rivets on Complex Shape

Hello,

I'm doing a project where I need to place a massive amount of rivets onto an aircraft fuselage. I'm doing the rivets by having a repeated plane uv'ed to a separate high res texture than the rest of the fuselage. I have tried a few different tools such as the object painter but am struggling to get uniform lines as there's no way that I know of to snap the brush to a straight line. There is a rivet plugin but that is using the number of rivets between two points rather than an interval between each object.  Is there another way to do this?

Thanks

Have you by any chance had a look at the OSL Rivets?

Thanks for the response,

So that wouldn't work because they need to be placed correctly as they are in real life following lines on the texture underneath.
