I am a beginner in 3d modeling.

After connecting the top and bottom edges, Edge #1 was created. When I moved it to the left along the X-axis, it created some kind of shadow (encircled in black line 4). I’m not sure why this is happening. I made sure no other polygons, vertices, or edges were selected before or after this process.

Secondly, when I created Edge #3 and moved it upward along the Y-axis, you can see the edge on the left side started to bend.

I think your model may not be aligned with the X and Y axes.  It is hard to tell where your first edge was created, but when you moved it to the left on the X axis it did not stay in line with the edges, or maybe it DID get moved a little in the Y axis.  In my screenshot below, you can see the edges A and B are not in line.  That dark shape is like a shadow due to the face being 'bent' out of plane.

You can also see that near the green C, the edge is not in line there either.  If you truly are moving the edges only in X or Y, then the edges must not be aligned perfectly with the axes.

Was this an object you created?  It may have gotten rotated slightly in the Z axis.

If you go under Edit Geometry and choose Edge and then move the line, the vertecies will move along the edge instead of distort the model. You could try that.
Just don't forget to turn that off afterwards.

I think you have two polygons overlapping each other one is under or over. Remove one of the polygons or start over again. A dark line usually means overlapping polygons.
