Mesh problem

Hi.

Would someone please have any ideas how I can solve this one.

I have created a model (imported into Max from Inventor) that has a lot of cuts in the parts to indicate brick joints. The Max file in the attached ZIP contains one particular brick face that I have detached from a part. When this is rendered there are several vertical "lines/bands" around the face.

My first reaction was that this was material related but it is actually due to the structure of the mesh. I noticed that there are extra vertices on all the darker faces that form the bands. Some that are in the middle of the rectangular faces can be deleted and that seems to lose the dark highlight. When I tried to delete the extra vertices near the edges of small rectangular faces they appear to be also connected elsewhere on the face so the model is damaged (see attached Jpegs showing vertex and result after deleting).

I have several of these parts in my Max model but this is the only one that is giving me problems, the others are all fine.

I have also tried ProOptimise to reduce the number of verts/polys but this did not work either.

Any ideas how I can quickly lose the vertical dark lines?

Many thanks,

Terry

It would seem easier to me if you just re-did the pattern with splines. As far as I can see it's just a flat rectangular pattern which can easily be done using splines without even having to use polygons.

Thanks.

The pattern is actually a bonded brick pattern that meets up properly at the side faces. I do this in Inventor so that the bricks are accurate. I realise that this would not be the way that Max users would approach it but when I apply brick material patterns to faces they don't meet up at the edges properly.

The structure of the polys is just how it imports from Inventor. If I used splines for the cuts how would I go about that? There are a lot of cuts and it is an irregular shape. Usually I don't have any problem with these type of parts, this is the first time.

Cheers,

Terry
