How to subdivide an edge?

I know this seems like a dumb question but I've already checked out a few other threads on the topic and tried some of those solutions. I have an edge on my mesh that for some reason will not subdivide, and I've tried using most if not all of the edit edges and edit geometry options with both vertex and edge selected. But it won't work.

Essentially I'm try to subdivide an edge, and I can't seem to figure out how I would go about that. Any help?

Hi,

Select the edge, then, from the Ribbon, Modeling tools, Edges, Insert Vertices, set the numbers

Of vertices in the small box and click the arrow next to it.

Before clickingBefore clicking

After clickingAfter clicking

As you can see the edge is subdivided and Max switches automatically to the Vertex sub-object level.
