Help with some direction for a beginner

Hi everyone, I just cracked open this awesomely, overpowering 3D program. I haven't really worked with many 3d programs yet, but i have plenty time to work on it. I am aiming for a cg movie in the long run, and/or 3d models for a video game. I have plenty experience in programming. I guess what i'm getting at is, i'm lost in the size of this program. I need some guidance in where exactly to start and head to with 3d models and animation. Maybe some good tutorials on all aspects of 3d art and animation. I guess ultimately i just want to make sure i am making models that i can use in a later date. If anyone can please leave me some feedback on where to get started and maybe some url to some good intermediate/beginner sites. It would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if i'm in the wrong forum or any problems i may have caused. Thank you very much. Hope to clime the ladders so i can help others.

Well, I would start with the Tutorials that ship with Max. They will get you started and past the "beginner" stage. Also, use the 3ds Max Help (On-line reference) and read up on the features described in the tutorials. Especially, read the beginning sections Getting Started with 3ds Max and Viewing and Navigating 3D Space.

You did not mention which version of Max you are using. That does help whomever respond so that you can be given the best information.

I agree with tim, you should go through the tuts that come with Max. I am a near beginner with Max 8 with a bit of experience with other modeling programs, and I'm working thru them now. I did try the 9 demo, before I got a copy of 8. The tuts are almost the same, but I found you can't get 9's demo files to work in 8, so I dl'd the tut files for 8 from another tread. Some of them are a bit tricky, but worth the effort, in the end.

( Yes, it's a legal licenced copy, just didn't have the tut cd with it. ) The tuts are almost the same, but I found you can't get 9's files to work in 8, so I dl'd the tut files for 8 from another tread. How is that possible?
The last version that shipped on a set of CD's was 7.
If you really did buy a license and authorize through Autodesk, then you are entitled to a boxed DVD. Demand your reseller provides you with one.

No. Any file saved in a higher version will not work in a lower version.

Yes. All the 3ds Max 8 tutorial support files are still available for download at:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=9861621&linkID=9241177

Problems with using cracked copies:
The license is infused throughout the program. Breaking it breaks parts of the program. You will get "bugs" that no one else will.

You may be getting malware as well.

You cannot upgrade.

You cannot get "Support."

Don't expect much help from around here.

As suggested tutorials that ship with Max is a good place to start.

Also check out this page as well:

@ Tim. Sry, I'm an idiot. On furthur inspection, I found the tut files on the DVD. (duh) I guess thats what I get for not looking in the right place.

"All the necessary files for this tutorial are provided with the software and can be found in the \tutorials\intro_to_modeling directory. Before starting the tutorials, copy the \tutorials folder to your local \3dsmax8 installation. "

:red:

Edited out the dumb statement in my previous post.

Hate to have you go to all that trouble if you have the files already.

(Something about starting a thread with the phrase "cracked open" that just makes me take notice.)
