Help with modeling technique

Can someone tell me the best way to achieve this type of text "lofting" or beveling in Max? If you look at the C4D tutorial located at the pasted link, you'll see what I mean.  (http://ae.tutsplus.com/tutorials/motion-graphics/aetuts-hollywood-movie-title-series-%E2%80%93-conan...)

Can the same thing be achieved using the Loft Compound Object in Max? The tutorial makes it look so effortless to achieve that strong "triangular" chiseled bevel. I believe the C4D technique is called NURBS Loft.

Any insight would be welcomed. Thanks!  🙂

Try to use Bevel Profile modifier for custom beveling.
