HELP- boolean and modeling problems *pics*

Greetings,

First of many posts! I just started to learn how to use Max switching over from Blender so relearning everything, but still have some basics from working with Blender, but still very beginner.
So Im learning to model for 3D printing and Im trying to make a Pokeball. I want to make it in two pieces but hit a wall

I thought I would stat off as one object so they fit together perfectly. My base I added Shell mod to my sphere and added another sphere inside to make the center ring. First thing I noticed is that when I cut out the center cylinder from my sphere with Boolean mod, it made it kind of strange (shown in photos and attachment) marked in yellow

My next problem is how should I go about separating them? I copied my bottom shell and tried to increase the inner shell so that I would try and boolean the bottom off and be left only with the top and bottom as two objects, like in the photo that I quick modeled in thinkercad. but increasing the inner shell wall makes it all wacky. (if youre wondering why not just use the tinkercad one i made is because I dont like how I cant subdivide to make it smoother...

Sorry if my description is pretty confusing! any help would be very appreciated and always willing to learn as much as I can

Hi, I haven't watched or read any of the Pokeball tutorials I've linked below so I don't know if they are exactly what you need. I would imagine that you can learn a few things from each and possibly get the model done. Hopefully so anyway. There are always several ways to do the same thing.

If not post back and someone will help further I'm sure. 🙂 🙂

Good luck!

Yeah I watched and made those but Im trying to make it in two pieces like my test model in tinkercad. But I think with the tutorials I got an idea of how to make it two parts and worry about joining and welding all the objects together so I can 3D print it. But for now I have a question about Boolean.

So Im trying to use the Red sphere to cut a hole in the green and blue objects. But Boolean wont work Im guessing its because of the cylinder in the center? How can I make it so that the boolean modifier will work?

Treat the booleans as separate operations. In Max, the boolean isn't a modifier... its actually a new geometry type. So you'll need to do a separate Boolean on each object. Akso try ProBoolean if the geometry is complicated. So create 2 red spheres. Boolean out the green top first... then with the second red sphere, boolean out  the blue object next.

Also the order of operation for booleans in important. In Max, use this rule of thumb "Modifies the first, deletes the second". So in other words select the green object ("the first"), click the boolean compound object button, choose the subtraction operation type, then click the red sphere as the operand ("the second").

Once done, use the xivew tools and the STL check modifier to double check the integrity of your geometry before you print. Here's a video that explains the use of xview tools.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the video it helped a lot. I took a break from modeling that and started to do a simpler project to get more use to everything. And I ran into another boolean problem. Im trying to subtract the blue parts and using proboolean and two of them subtract ok but the middle one causes everything to delete. how can I fix it or work around this?

Hi. Has these "middle ones" been scaled on object level? If so, then use the "Reset X-form" utility (found in the Utility panel) on these object, collapse them, and try again.

Hope it helps

BTW - Regarding the ball you tried to make in the original/first post: The troublesome part is the round hole, so why not rotate the sphere 90 degrees and use the original topology to make this hole instead of Boolean? The horizontal cuts can be made with a simple slice modifier.
