Creating random/noisy interwoven mesh - "Hair and Fur (VSM)"?

Hi All,

I am hoping to create a hollow sphere, with the shell appearing to be made of disorderly, relatively thick strands. Ideally, some strands would even merge and split. For example, some mesh or foam filters (attached photo).

From my novice perspective, "Hair and Fur (VSM)" modifier might be the easiest way to do this. However, I have not been able to figure out what parameters would achieve this inter-woven effect.

Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations for doing this? Many thanks in advance.

Quick update, I think using "BlobMesh" to remove some volume from a solid object may also be viable, but I haven't figured out how to really use it. I would probably need a multi-layer sphere with random vertices?

I also found another example similar to what I'm trying to achieve, unfortunately not having much luck finding tutorials for "mesh", "foam", "sponge" (that are not about CFDs).
