Crash on Render To Texture (when picking highpoly)

I'm trying to do a render to texture for a detailed pagoda model. my high poly version is textured with default 3ds max materials, and about 6,000,000 polys. my lowpoly is about 4000 polys.

when I "pick" my highpoly object to project for render to texture, an error saying "unhandled system exception" appears and a script window comes up with "pmodInterface.autowrapCage()" highlighted. it does not create the projection modifier for the object (however i can give the object a projection modifier myself no problem)

I cannot continue to bake from this point. I followed some of the instructions here to the best of my abilities and am running it off my SSD but still no luck.

I am on an i7 8700k, 16gb ram, 1080ti 11gb 256 gb ssd/1tb 7200rpm hdd 600 watt psu

any assistance would be greatly appreciated. here is the scene file
