Controlling Material ID in new polygons in an Editable Poly

Hello everyone,

This has been an issue that irritated me for years, I've looked for a solution but can't seem to find one.

I model a lot using Editable Polys. To create new polygons I usually select an edge of a polygon and use Shift+drag. But whenever I create a new polygon, its Material ID is always 1. Regardless of the Material ID of the polygon this new one was created from.

Isn't there a setting that can control the ID of new polygons and set it to whatever it was on the adjacent polygon?

If there was a setting like that it would save me a lot of time and would eliminate the risk of leaving behind polygons with the wrong Material ID...

I hope I'm making myself clear.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I guess this is a question of the way one works - I usually assign Mat-IDs when I've finished modeling. When doing so I  start by assigning #1 to all of them, so for me it comes quite handy like it it is now...

And no, I don't know of such a setting or even where it could be besides the Edit Polygon-section of the Edit(able) Poly.

Hi, thanks for replying!

Indeed, in your case, this option wouldn't be very useful to you. I do assign material IDs as I'm modelling because I use Turbosmooth with "separate by materials" checked. It allows me to have an idea of how the object is going to look like.

It would be nice to have the option.

Cheers
