Connecting 3ds max objects using edge loop, connect and bridge tools

I'm working my way through a book called, '3DS Max Speed Modeling for 3D Artists', but got stuck at the following section:

This part is in Chapter 3 under 'Forming the Base Model' and section 12. I'm finding it difficult to follow exactly what I'm supposed to do? I think I've done the part shown in the first image (top left-hand corner), but I'm not able to proceed beyond this.

The side view of the object looks like this:

The part that the red arrow is pointing to, I need to connect this with the rest of the section. I'd appreciate help with understanding this procedure, as shown in this book

I managed to figure this out myself, so don't actually require any further help after all.

 

What I didn't originally realise was that I needed to delete the centre polygons (shown in screenshot as red square) and then use the 'bridge' tool to connect the edges of the hole to the new element. I need to increase the number of segments of the bridge to '2' in order for it to complete all round.
