You don't say which version of Max. That's always a good idea.
Did you ever have the crosshair? You don't say if you had it and it went away, or, if you've never had it and want to have it.
Can you explain what's going on a little more fully? Have you turned the setting 'Display Cross Hair Cursor' on and then off to see if it works? You can find it in the 'General' tab of the 'Preference Settings.'
