Best way to cut shapes into objects

Hey everyone

I'm in the process of modelling some boots for my Character. The boots has a pattern around the top. I've attached a pic of exactly what I want and I'm just wondering the best way to go about it.

So far I've tried creating the chapes with splines. changing the thickness and applying turbo smooth then using bend to wrap it around but obviously the boot is a odd shape at the top and it doesnt wrap around correctly.

I tried cutting the shapes into the boot then extruding the shape and applying chamfer but this also mucks up and seriously messes with the geomatry.

I'm hoping theres a more simple solution that I havent though of yet.

Any help.

Hi. Since the pattern  is quite small and only extrudes very little, I would personally make the it with a bump or normal map + having it shown in the diffuse map as well.

Hope it helps.
