Basic Modelling

Hello guys,

I am new to 3D Max. I am learning by myself, mostly by trying or watching some tutorials. I started to flirt with polygon modelling and I watched this tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tup6fZdswSA

I was wondering how its all made. Exact procedure of pulling the new edge and making it bigger/smaller (some kind of bevel tool?). Second question-  for instance I have a circular plane and I want to sag the middle of it down (like the guy did at the end of the video). How can I do it?

Thank you so much.

hello , i am same with you . as a beginner in 3ds max.

i think , everything in modeling animation was begin with a plane , and the question is how good are you to make the polygon useful ?

i want to ask you , why if i input the bitmap as a patron , the pixel bitmap was smashed?

thank you before.

you should try patch and spline modeling. you can think of it as a polygon already subdivided. which makes it softer and more flexible

First, you need to work with editable polygon objects, or with an edit poly modfier.  Avoid editable mesh, because that's more of a legacy mesh format, and lacks many functions of editable polygon.

To pull new edges out, like he does in that video, just hold down shift on the keyboard while you pull a border edge, in edge subobject mode.  It's called "edge extension" modeling.  Works the same also in border subobject mode.

At the end, it appears he's using "soft selection" in vertex sub-object mode to pull the handle up and down, and the bowl of the spoon to shape it.  There's a lot of ways to do that in Max, however.  I use the Move brush in the Graphite Freeform tab, to do similar soft selection sculpting, without having to be in subobject mode, but learn the basics first, before trying that.

Personally, I think that video is too fast, and not a good learning tool.  Find better tutorial videos, which are at normal pace, if you want to learn quickly.

Thank you so much luxxeon. Going to look at those techniques a bit closer.
I appreciate your help and tips.

Happy new year btw
