Smoothing Groups + Blender?

When ever I import an .fbx file from Blender, and I am trying to create my own smoothing groups, it doesn't work. It seems like, 3dsmax can't "delete" or "overwrite" the smoothing group information from Blender.
Reset XForm, doesn't do it either.

  • Is there any modifier in the stack, that could resolve that issue?
  • Or any other solution?

    note:
it would be cool to keep Blender's smoothing groups, but on top of it, I would like to make changes.
Add new ones, or change existing ones.

Thx for any thoughts, ideas and workaround.

You've stumbled on something that worries me for years... that happens quite often. Everytime it happens to me I try so many things to get rid of it that I can't remember what exactly the solution was 😞
Try

  • applying a Smooth modifier and tweak settings
  • select all polygons and detach them
  • create some primitive and attach the faulty model to it
  • and such...

  1. Modifier List: Edit Normals
  2. Select all the normals and click Reset

A few years late but yes exactly this. The problem probably isn't smoothing, but rather normals. Probably put a weighted normal modifier in blender before exporting or something like that.
