when i add the Shell Modifier to a geometry i'm getting facets on one side of the model.

the Smooth Modifier doesn't not get rid of it.

Does anyone here have a solution? i have a feeling this is an old issue

thanks!

Not sure how you created your mesh and what your stack looks like, but with when I tried to quickly recreate your issue with a curvy mesh both inner and outer edges of Shell were smoothed fine (Max 2022, Arnold) :

Did you try to select the inner faces (or outer faces depending on your inner or outer shell amount setting) from the Shell Modifier (at the bottom of the Shell Mod rollout) and with those selected put a Smooth modifier on the stack?

thanks, that's helpful to see yours worked.

i'm sculpting a Plane in Mudbox 2017 then importing into Max 2017 then applying the shell and smooth modifiers.

it's an Editable Poly. does it work better as a Mesh?

Try adding smooth or meshsmooth to the imported mesh before adding the shell modifier.   If that doesn't work, then try to select the inner surface from shell modifier like I said above and then add smooth above the shell.  You can try with Editable mesh instead of Editable Poly, but I  don't know if that should matter in your situation.
