Hello everyone,
I am working on a low poly, modular space ship for a school project in 3ds Max 2017 (see attached max file). This should be done in a few hours, but until now I've been troubleshooting over 75% of the time. Since I haven't been able to fix the problem with the help of many, many forum searches, I'd like to ask your help in my own post. The issue is as follows:
I'm modeling the spaceship parts for a few minutes, up to an hour. Usually after I've used the edge modeling technique and/or selecting and orbiting a little too fast, the whole file gets corrupted. Not corrupted in a way that it can't be opened anymore or gives errors, but corrupted in that from a certain point on, all of 3ds Max reacts very slowly. The viewport fps drops down to 0.1-0.2 and selecting anything in the scene or clicking on a menu item takes at least 5 seconds to come through. I think it's the file that gets corrupted, because other files don't have the same problem. Also, it's under 1.5 Mb and only around 1000 poly's.
I've tried the following methods to solve it and some worked temporarily, but now nothing seems to work anymore:
- Clearing the cache with gc() in the prompt line;
- Disabling 'Improve Quality Progressively' in viewport display performance window;
- Restarting Max;
- Re-installing Max;
- Restarting the computer;
- Saving the file under a different name and working from the new file;
- Duplicating the file manually, renaming it and working from the new file;
- Saving the file compatible with 3ds Max 2016 and opening it in Max 2016 (resulting in the same performance issue);
- Selecting another driver in viewport preferences;
- Updating and re-installing graphics card drivers;
- Allocating more memory to draw files in windows configuration;
Because it's only 3ds Max that gets slow, I'm guessing it's a fault in either the file or 3ds Max. I'd love to get this resolved, because right now I don't have a backup file that doesn't have this problem and I wouldn't like to start over to get the same problem again.
My system specs are:
(Lenovo ideapad Y700)
Intel Core i7-6700HQ @ 2.60Ghz
8 GB DDR4 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (4 gb)
Thank you for your help in advance!
