Newbie - Black holes(spots) while modeling

Not really expierenced with the program and I've encountered this so called "problem". Basically when I start modeling some basic shapes and then render them i get this black opening that isn't there in the first place. I can't seem to figure why is this thing shown on my render window. When I  try to look around the shape I just cannot find it. Why is this occuring? It is difficult to determine what the issue is from the images - it could possibly be :

a.) inconsistent smoothing groups (light/shadow respond differently on mixed smoothing groups)

b.) there are floating faces i.e. the faces are not connected at the edges

c.) a shadow caused by height in the model

those are my guesses.

Hello @Anonymous,

I'd like to help with your normal/shading issue in the viewport.  @blakestone has some good ideas about this in his post, and I wanted to offer 1 or 2 more possible solutions.  (Smoothing groups is a good bet, kudos to @blakestone)

If you select the faces of your model and press the button below, does it seem to fix the issue?  If not, it may be due to topology.

Make Planar.png

Typically we want to keep topology (edge flow) in quads or lower.  You don't need to do that until the end really, but having 5+ sided polygons can often create some weird shading artifacts in the viewport, often due to smoothing groups or vertex placement and edge overlapping.  Please keep me posted!
