Modeling shape from a spline

Hi everybody.

I'm juste trying to modeling a spartan shield (the standard shape is very easy) but i have difficulties to realize the "V" shape on the top of the shield.

Someone can explain me how the man is doing at 1:41. I don't understand what he's doing to have the V shape on the shield with the spline.

Probably a ShapeMerge (Compound object).
