Max Terrain modelling

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums and also a bit of a max newbie and wonder if you guys could help me?

I have spent the whole day trying to recreate the terrain in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B17VEFZyuQ&t=128s (at 2:20)

I have tried everything that I can think of but cannot get the geometry to be as clean as this. I need it to be nice and clean as I need to be able to loop the middle line for forest pack.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure if the following will suit your needs.  It is a terrain model converted to an editable poly.

T1.PNG

The editable poly model can be smoothed if desired.  Here it is with a tuboSmooth modifier.

t2.PNG

I created it by first constructing a 3D spline for the centerline of the path in 2D then moved the vertices in Z to get the general changes in elevation I wanted.  Do not use too many spline points. I used 7 as can be seen here.

t3.PNG

I then edited the centerline spline and used Outline to create a spline offset to both sides.  The end segments of the outline were deleted and then the outline splines were detached so that  I had a series of individual splines .  Additional splines were created in 3D as show above to further define the surface I wanted.

The splines were then selected and used to create a terrain surface (create, compound objects).  At this stage you can further refine or simplify the triangulation via the terrain parameters.  You can convert the terrain to an editable poly and smooth as desired.  I am not sure how to generate a quad mesh as shown in the video if that is what is needed.    I don't have a lot of terrain building experience so perhaps someone can jump in here with some suggestions.
