Max Crashes Whilst UVW Unwrapping

This issue is really winding me up. I'm trying to work on a university assignment and everytime I keep trying to UVW Unwrap my objects, Max keeps crashing! It keeps freezing for a second or two and then reports it encountered an error before prompting me to save and then crashes to the desktop. The issue appears to be random, although I suspect something specific keeps triggering it. What's also annoying is that I've reported the bug report, but like all the reports I've filed, I've had no response from any of them!

It's possible bad geometry is confusing it and it crashes. Do you have  file that does it constantly? We can test on our end to see if it happens to us as well. Also, which version of 3ds Max?

With bug reports, they often will not correspond with you unless they need more information. So unless you keep track of the update logs, you may never know if your bug report gets fixed or not.  It all goes into a queue, and they get fixed by priority. I submit reports whenever I can. Some of mine have been fixed, others didn't get fixed until the next version...But there are some that complain about bugs that they assume others have submitted, or are just too lazy to submit and would rather complain. So it's good that you did submit a report, whether it is a duplicate to someone else's or not.

I think it does trigger when there's bad geometry, but that tends to happen when a mesh/UV randomly goes haywire whilst I'm sorting them out. Though I swear it's crashed even when they haven't. I'll have a look for a file where it's likely to happen. As to the version I'm using, it's the 2020.2 Student Version.

How do you find the update logs for your submitted reports? The most I get is an automated email saying I've submitted the report.

Well, to find your submitted bugs online...as far as I know, you can't. When you submit a bug, I believe you get an ID for it. Someone who works on 3ds Max can look that up, and see how it was logged, if there was more interaction with the user for more information, etc. But you can't look it up yourself unfortunately. And it won't match the code for the bug itself when it is fixed, that's a separate code they use. When there is an update to 3ds Max, the bugs that are fixed are listed in the release notes, which are found in the Help menu> Autodesk 3ds Max Help, which will load a web page. Right below What's New is the Release Notes. I read through them sometimes, but I don't think I've actually seen a bug that I've reported, that was actually fixed, in there. Or I just missed it.

I wish there was a better answer, and I do hope they improve how bugs are logged and for us to reference them later. It would be nice if the code that is generated for our bugs be connected to their internal system, almost how patents can reference many other patents when you search for them.

Everything what @PropChad said, and additional to that: It is always VERY helpful to know what exact version you are using:

For example 3dsmax2019.3.

This allows for looking into the version Release Notes and check for possible fixes that have been already released.

I'd SOOOO love for this problem to be fixed; it's really annoying me. It makes UV unwrapping a nightmare within Max! I'll even upload a Screencast video and my latest save file. I have a very simple low-poly kitchen sink I'm currently UV unwrapping as part of an assignment for uni. Every time I try to manually unwrap the tap it randomly crashes. It's always when I try to manually add edge cuts/seams and the UV island may randomly blow out of proportion. I'm using 3ds Max 2020.3. I've checked the release notes but there's nothing there in relation to the issue I have.

Just like 3ds Max, I've no idea what's up with this forum. I've just pasted the link to the correct video, which shows up when I edit the post, but seeing it in the thread, it's showing a video I recorded for a different issue instead. o_O Not to mention whenever I try and select the video from the drop-down list of my videos, the reply won't post. It's like it just keeps refreshing the page instead. >_>

I'm not even going to bother editing the other post. The last time I did that the video wouldn't show in the reply at all. Hopefully, *this* will show the correct video...

EDIT: Big surprise, it doesn't even show it. >_> If I try selecting the video from my list, it keeps complaining the HTML link is invalid, which it shouldn't be. And if I paste the URL, it shows in the edit window, but then shows nothing once I've posted it. I'll just have the paste the link; sick of faffing about with this.

Just had Max stop responding on me whilst sorting out the UV and crash without warning. No error, no request to backup the save, no suggestion to submit a report. Nothing.

I just played around with your file for a while and got no crash in 2020.3. Crash to desktop without CER hints at problems with display driver since the UVW editor window uses DirectDraw for displaying UV`s.

Not sure where to start looking here. What did you try to fix it?

Did you try resetting the Peel and manually add seams to it a few times...? It doesn't always happen at the same time or in the same place; it's random. Or, could it be that the Student Version is affected...? That's what I'm using. I don't recall having the problem when UV unwrapping at uni, though I might have done. Pretty sure the version on their systems isn't the Student version though.

Well it can't be my display drivers because they've recently been updated and this has been plaguing me for sometime. Ever since I started learning how to UV unwrap in Max as part of my assignment. I did a fresh install using DDU. It can be worse on my laptop. My desktop uses a GTX 1080 and my laptop a 1060, but there have been quite a few times where the software will hang for a while just by trying to move a UV island whilst I've been unwrapping. Crashes from adding seams happens more frequently on there too.

I used a laptop with 8GB Ram and a GF MX150 card and tried to mimic your workflow from the videos as good as i could. Multiple Resets, Quick Peel, Creating and editing seams.Peel mode on and off. Splitting edges.Moving UV's.

But reproducing random crashes can be difficult.I might just be lucky.

So i take my own stuff as reference: I can`t remember any crash that was specifically tied to UV editing with 2020.x versions.Let alone crashes to desktop.

It`s definitely NOT the Student Version. It`s the same as the commercial version, just with a different license.

I noticed one Bug however:

If you are in Peel mode and do a Reset, the UV-island can no longer be moved. You have to deactivate Peel Mode and activate again. That`s definitely a limitation or bug, that should be reported.

Next time it crashes with CER, you should provide your mail address within the report, so staff members can take a look into the crash dump.

What are you trying to do with that sink in peel mode beside trying to crash Max?

That's not tool for that geometry and from what I manage to see, way you using it is not for any mesh shape.

With one button click on some of Flatten Mapping options will brake your mesh and pack it in UV space.

Very very strange. Wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one who's encountered this issue out of all the students on my course at uni. 😕

Funnily enough, I posted that bug on the forum yesterday as I encountered that for the first time last night. Never had that happen before either. Haven't encountered it today though.

Trouble is, I've filed one of those reports several times, and I think I filed one via the site as well. Haven't had a single reply from anyone about it. 😞

I don't understand. I'm trying to manually add cuts and make specific UV islands so I can better paint/texture them. The assignment I'm doing involves trying to match a specific art style (from Pokemon Let's Go) and I need to add highlights and shadows along edges etc.

About the crashes i would try to contact either Hagen.deloss or Jon.Bell and ask if they could take a look at your crash reports to find out what is causing the crashes. You will have to provide the mail address that you used when you sent the CER report. You can use Private Message to contact them.

Please note that we are talking about the Crash report NOT the Bug Report.

Okay, thanks. I'll give one of them a try. Just a slight problem though: I'm not sure how you send someone a private message. I've clicked on a user's username, but it only takes me to a page of their stats - threads they've started, comments they've made etc.

EDIT: Oh, no, never mind. Just figured it out. 😛

Well, I messaged Hagen.deloss, but I've had no response. 😕 I'll try Jon.
